The Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) and the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) issued a joint statement on Tunisian migrants in the occupied city of Melilla in light of the spread of the Coronavirus.
UGTT and FTDES expressed their deep concern over the situation of Tunisian migrants in the center of Ceti Melilla, in light of these exceptional difficult circumstances that the world is going through today (especially Spain and Tunisia) resulting from the spread of the new COVID-19 pandemic, which represents a serious threat to human life.
The two organizations stressed that “according to the strict measures approved by the World Health Organization and many countries to limit the spread of this pandemic, such as the closing of borders and measures to reduce friction, approach, stone and isolation, the situation of migrants in these centers is more fragile, given the special circumstances of high numbers and narrowed space as well as the bad shelter conditions at the Ceti Melilla center that have created overcrowding, leaving migrants at a greater risk of infection.”
UGTT and FTDES also affirmed their support for the Spanish people, their trade union and civil powers in the face of this ordeal, and called for the utmost protection of Tunisian migrants in Melilla, especially that among them are women and children, by taking all necessary preventive measures to prevent the possibility of transmission of infection to migrants.
The statement called for strict adherence to all health standards imposed by the World Health Organization in the field of sterilization and prevention of touching and docking as well as imposing a safety distance between people, in addition to contingency plans to transport migrants to places that meet the required health conditions.
The two organizations stressed that the Spanish authorities must understand that migrants fear the risk of infection and they have a humanitarian responsibility to provide them with protection.
