Amnesty International: Hundreds of Workers are Infected with Coronavirus in Qatar

Amnesty International has revealed that hundreds of workers in Qatar have been infected with coronavirus, while it warns of a pandemic due to the conditions in which they live in the Doha industrial zone.

Last Friday, the organization confirmed the closing of parts of the industrial zone in Doha, after hundreds of cases of coronavirus were recorded in the country and called on Qatar for non-discrimination in health care for people with corona.

“As the world struggles to contain the spread of the Coronavirus, migrant workers trapped in camps such as those in Qatar are at greater risk of an epidemic”, said Steve Cockburn, deputy director of Amnesty International for Global Issues.

“The labor camps in Qatar are very crowded and lack sufficient water and sanitation, meaning that workers will inevitably be less able to protect themselves from the virus, and the proximity of workers to each other in cramped camps does not allow for any kind of social distancing”, added Cockburn.

He continued: “The Qatari government must ensure that human rights remain central to all attempts to prevent and contain the Coronavirus, and that all people have access to health care, including preventive care and treatment for all affected without discrimination”.
