Jordanian newspaper “Al-Ghad” revealed the story of one orphan girl who had been abandoned on Mecca Street, one of the main streets in the capital Amman, after getting accused of having undergone Coronavirus examination.
Although the results of her analysis were negative twice, her relatives refused to shelter her until the family protection department intervened.
The girl, who suffers from a movement disability, resides in the home of one of her brothers, who suffered from influenza symptoms such as high fever and a severe cough, which prompted her family to go to Prince Hamza Hospital for a coronavirus examination, where the results of two tests conducted at different times showed that she was not infected with the virus.
After proving that she did not have the disease and that what she was experiencing are just ordinary flu symptoms, the girl left the hospital and was transferred by the Civil Defense to the home of one of her sisters.
“Al-Ghad” newspaper, quoting the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Persons with Disabilities, Dr. Muhannad Al-Azza, confirmed that, “The girl contacted us after her relative’s family kicked her out, it was around ten at night, we asked her to go to the nearest police patrol and ask them to transfer her to the medical city emergency”.
“The emergency department checked her in, where she spent several hours. The council addressed several official authorities to provide shelter and assistance to them, but the only party that responded was the Family Protection Department”, added Al-Azza.
Representatives of the Family Protection Department went to the Medical City emergency after midnight to try to find a solution to the girl’s case, who remained in the city’s emergency until authorities managed to persuade one of her sisters, who lived in a remote suburb of Amman, to host her sister.
Muhannad Al-Azza confirmed that the girl is now staying in an isolated room on the roofs of her sister’s house, which she is currently caring for after the family protection authorities managed to convince the family that the girl does not pose any risk and that the infection she had was just an ordinary flu.
Al-Azza also noted that this situation reflects one of the challenges faced by persons with disabilities during periods of crisis and pandemics, so there is an urgent need for a plan and provision of services based on a comprehensive approach that takes into account the needs of this group.
