During the visit conducted by a delegation from the International Labor Organization last week to investigate the situation of Palestinian workers in the labor market of the occupied territories, Aisha Hamouda, Secretary of the Women’s Department and Imad Awajneh, Secretary of the General Federation of Trade Unions of Palestine in Jericho Governorate, gave a presentation on the violations faced by women workers in occupied territories.
In their presentation to the International Labor Organization mission, more details were highlighted about what Palestinian workers are exposed to in the settlements of Jericho and Al Aghwar, where there are 38 colonies located on citizens’ lands.
In these colonies, female Palestinian workers are employed for long hours that are disproportionate to their wages. Sexual harassment is also amongst these abuses as well as many other degrading treatment that attain human dignity.
Aisha Hamouda stressed that the need for Palestinian families to make ends meet is what drives women to seek work, as Palestinian statistics indicate that there are 26.000 Palestinian families are headed by women, and this indicates an increase in the share of women in the Palestinian workforce, and the high level of participation in the labor market.
The Federation pushed for designing a new vision to amend the Palestinian labor law from a gender perspective to increase its effectiveness in addressing violations against women in the workplace.
