The government of the Sultanate of Oman has formally approved the Minimum Wage Law, and the Ministry of Community Development revealed that the Omani government, which currently relies on more than seven million migrant workers , making up the largest proportion of the workforce, is also planning to ease restrictions to change the work system in the Sultanate’s lands.
At this moment, the government is facing great criticism because of the poor conditions in which foreign workers live due to the high cost of living, low wages, and the cost of their own housing.
According to governmental officials, the Sultanate of Oman wishes to address this problem by raising the minimum wage, especially as it is preparing to start the new job system so that Omani workers occupy at least 80% of government jobs and about 20% of government jobs for foreign workers.
In a related context, a new report of the Ministry of Human Resources and Nationalization in the Sultanate of Oman revealed that the minimum salary for jobs at the present time in 2020 of those working in private sector institutions and establishments, during open employment days is not less than 5000 dirhams per month.
The Ministry of Human Resources added that this salary comes in full-time cases in the Sultanate.
