Tunisian Health Unions Demand the Private Sector to Assume its Responsibilities in Facing the Corona Epidemic

Health unions of the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) demanded that the government take bolder measures to confront the Corona virus, including closing the borders, stopping all flights and taking strict positions towards the underprivileged and those who tamper with the health of Tunisians and the monopolists over people’s livelihood.

In a joint statement, the General Health Syndicate, the General Union of Doctors, Pharmacists, and Public Health Dentists and the Union of Hospital and University Physicians demanded that all necessary protection be provided to all health professionals in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO) standards so that health institutions in turn do not become vulnerable and infectious.

Frequent and daily sterilization of transportation and public spaces are important while avoiding overcrowding by changing working times.

Health unions stressed the necessity of providing all means of cleaning in the workplace, providing antiseptic and cleaning care, especially in the vicinity of hospitals, and the need to urge the private health sector to allocate all its capabilities to real and effective contribution and protect all workers, in addition to the importance of involving civil society in accordance with a clear program for active participation.

Health unions affirmed Tunisians’ right to adequate and humane health services and recalled their constant demand for a budget increase in the Ministry of Health, the provision of the necessary human resources and a review of the health map.

They called on citizens to voluntarily comply with recommendations regarding prevention, conscious and full commitment to those in confinement and self-isolation, stressing the determination of health professionals to win and fulfill their noble profession duty.
