The workers of the National Agency for Employment in Algeria threatened to enter a periodic strike for three days a week, in case their demands were not met
The raised demands were mainly regarding the provision of equal wages.
The National Employment Agency sent a protest notice to the Algerian Ministry of Labor and Employment if the stalling to meet their demands continues.
According to the Algerian newspaper “Alchorouk”, the majority of workers in more than 30 provinces in the country agreed in a secret ballot to enter the strike.
The workers attributed their resort to the strike option to the failure to fulfil the promises they received regarding the improvement and unification of wages between the sectors of the Ministry of Labor, Employment, Social Security, Equality and Justice.
In a letter addressed to Algerian President Abdelmajid Taboun, they demanded that workers upgrade and activate the agency's role and give it authority to hold accountable those who failed to eliminate unemployment and monitor the recruitment process.
The National Employment Agency in Algeria is responsible for organizing, providing, and developing the labor market and ensuring that every job applicant or employee has an effective employment service.
Labor threats coincide with the decline in energy revenues in Algeria by 14.48% in 2019, which led to an increase in the trade deficit in the OPEC member country by 34.81% over the previous year.
Algeria is trying to cut spendings on imports in the wake of a drop-in oil and gas revenues in recent years, due to a drop in the volume of exports and world prices.
In December 2019, Algeria adopted the 2020 budget, which includes cuts to public spendings, but it allows foreign investors to hold majority stakes in projects outside the energy sector, the presidency said.
