Dozens of NGOs called on the European Union countries to expedite the transportation of unaccompanied minor migrants from the Greek islands in the Aegean to safer places on their territories.
They stressed in a statement that the hot spots in the Greek islands are not very suitable for these children, and constitute a threat to their lives, especially that they are deprived of their basic rights.
According to the same statement, organizations, including Doctors Without Borders, warned of serious and widespread violations of human rights and threats to children's health and security at migrant hot spots on the Greek islands in the Aegean.
More than 1.800 unaccompanied children are struggling to survive on the Greek islands, noting that children are deprived of their basic rights, such as the right to shelter, water, food, health and psychological care, as well as education, as mentioned in the press release.
Oxfam, which joined other humanitarian organizations in its request to move the children to safe places, said that “children and vulnerable people are abandoned in refugee camps, where most people do not feel safe, and many suffer an incredible shock. This is inhumane and unacceptable”.
As reported by migrantnews website, these children are subjected to deteriorating and inhumane living conditions, and many of them cannot stay in centers designated to host children, due to the lack of places, and they are forced to face unhealthy and dangerous conditions as many of them sleep in the open.
In the statement, human rights organizations also pointed out that psychologists working with unaccompanied migrant children on the island of Lesbos have reported to the media that there is an increase in the number of children attempting to commit suicide or harm themselves.
