Fishermen of the “Kafr al-Sheikh” region have been on strike since February 24 in protest against the insurance law.
The “Burullus Tower” fishermen in Kafr Al-Sheikh objected to the new insurance law, as the boats docked on the port amid widespread outrage from the owners of the boats, demanding to amend the provisions in the law, which obliges them to pay high annual contributions for each worker on the boat.
The fishermen demanded the cancellation of the obligation of the owner of each fishing boat to pay the contribution value for workers by 15% of the minimum wage multiplied by the number of workers as a result of the license of the boat multiplied by 12 months annually.
The value of payment amounts to 1.800 pounds annually for each worker on the boat.
The fishermen confirmed that this is considered a terrible exaggeration and unfairness to the owner of the boat, who has to pay 1.300 pounds annually for social insurance.
The protesters explained in press statements that the new insurance law will oblige fishing boats’ owners to pay ten times this amount according to the number of workers registered with the boat license, which has a minimum of 6 workers and a maximum of more than 30 workers depending on the size and strength of the boat, as the work of workers on fishing boats is not fixed as some say.
