Mauritania: Tension in the Primary Education Sector

Primary school teachers in Mauritania entered a two-day teaching strike starting yesterday, and also organized, in conjunction with the beginning of the strike, demonstrations to demand the government to respond to their demands.

The teachers announced a teaching strike and protests and stopped hours of teaching, as well as conducting demonstrations before they decided to escalate to a two-day suspension from teaching, according to press reports.

The teachers accused the concerned ministry of delaying and refusing to respond to their legitimate demands, considering that any talk about educational reform that does not consider the teacher as a center of such process, is doomed to failure.

Teachers demanded the necessity of putting effort to improve the conditions of work for teachers both financially and morally.
