The Central Council of the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions issued a statement regarding the barriers to union work and the violations faced by unionists, in which it affirmed that union work is subject to serious retreats due to some declines in major companies that undermine freedom of association and the rights of unionists.
The press release went through the most important violations of trade union work in major companies, namely the cessation of the automatic deduction of trade union membership and its undermining of the trade union movement as well as weakening it financially so that it cannot fulfil its basic material obligations such as administrative costs.
The statement also referred to the disruption of collective bargaining with a number of companies and the retreat from the collective bargaining mechanism that organizes the dialogue process, and violating Labor Law No. 36 of 2012 Chapter Fourteen.
The Central Council statement condemned the targeting of the "ALBA" company for full-time trade unionists, stressing that the Trade Union Law protects full-time trade unionists defending workers' rights, and guarantees them all of their material privileges that their colleagues obtain at the same job level, as stated in Royal Decree No. 33 of 2002 and Resolution of Trade Union No. 9 of 1 year in 2005.
This targeting is considered as punishment for trade unionists who are required by law to seek to defend workers ’rights without detracting from their privileges.
The Union called on the Ministry of Labor and Social Development to fulfil its role, which is already stipulated in the law, to abide by the labor law and the trade union law by requiring all companies and institutions to respect the trade union right and the decision to be part of a union.
Also, the press release called to refrain from prejudice towards the rights of trade unionists and not to consider full-time an excuse used by some employers to undermine the rights of the unionist as a worker who has all the rights and privileges similar to those in his rank and position at work.
