Morocco: About Three Million Unauthorized Employees Work in the Informal Economy

A report by the Royal Institute for Strategic Studies revealed that about three million unauthorized employees (2.93 million) are employed in the informal economy, while 2.34 million are active family assistants without compensation, and 1.15 million are unemployed.

It is clear from the data provided by the Royal Institute that there are only 1.17 million authorized employees of the private sector and 850 thousand in the public sector.

As for the inactive population, estimated at 13 million, there are three million students, ten million pensioners, stay-at-home female carers, elderly, sick and disabled individuals.

2050 Predictions indicate that about 5 million active people will be added to the current 12 million, and it is expected that the rate of activity among women will move from 22% to 40% by 2050.

Such predictions mean that creating 200 thousand net jobs annually will remain necessary to maintain the activity rate recorded in 2018, which is approximately 46 percent.
