Bahraini Shura Council Votes Against a Bill Ensuring Regular Basis Wages to Workers

The Bahraini Shura Council unanimously voted against a proposed amendment to the Labor Law. The amendment would provide a guarantee for workers to obtain full and regularly wages from their employers.

work for a wage protection system, which is decree No. 59 of 2018.

Followers confirm that this decree lacks details regarding the mechanisms and procedures for paying wages, and it does not guarantee payment of full wages regularly.

On the other hand, the proposed amendment explicitly stipulates that employers are not discharged except when they transfer the full wage to the workers account in one of the banks licensed by the Central Bank of Bahrain.

Press reports stated that Shura Council member Muhammad Ali Hassan clarified the difference between the proposed amendment and the previous decree, in the parliamentary session held last Sunday.

Hassan said that “If we look at Decree No. (59) which was approved in 2018, and the new proposal we will find one difference, which is ensuring that workers receive their dues without delay or deduction, and in fact, we find that many companies in Bahrain, or business owners in particular, are delaying the payment of their workers ’wages for a period that extends to months”.

Migrant Rights Organization had previously reported that there had been an escalation in the non-payment of wages.

Bahrain was expected to implement the WPS Protection System in September 2019 after several postponements. However, the system is still being piloted for large companies, and has not yet been implemented in small and medium-sized companies that employ the majority of migrant workers.
