Egypt: Dismissal of the President of the Workers Union Committee in the General Authority for Adult Education

The president of the executive body of the General Authority for Adult Education issued a decision to dismiss Ahmed Abdel Mordi, the head of the (Independent) Syndicate Committee for Personnel of the Adult Education Authority, in serious violation of the principles of union freedoms, and in explicit violation of the provisions of the Syndical Organizations Law and Protection of the Right to union work No. 213 of 2017 and its amendments.

The trade union organization of the Adult Education Authority had fought over the past few months to defend the rights of its employees, demanding the authority to implement Prime Minister Decision No. 1627 of 2019 issued for the Minimum Wages Report, and to amend the supplementary wage for workers according to what was done in many other government agencies.

The syndicate also addressed several parties and wrote to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Minister of Education in order to achieve the workers' fair demands based on reality and the law. In addition, the union reported some of the authority's suspicious corruption files.

Instead of conducting means of dialogue and collective bargaining with the trade union committee representing workers, the General Authority for Adult Education has taken a series of arbitrary measures against Ahmed Abdel-Mordi, the president of the union and its members.

The head of the authority submitted a statement to the National Security Agency accusing Ahmed Abdel-Mordi of inciting workers.

As a result, on November 23, 2019, a security force arrested and detained him for a day, while stopping his rewards on the basis of saying that his trade union full-time activity is undeserving in violation of the provisions of Article 49 of the Trade Union Organizations Law No. 213 of 2017.

The president of the commission was not satisfied with the arbitrary measures he took against the union leader, but these measures extended to some of the other members of the council, where the position of the delegated committee treasurer was changed to another job, which entailed reducing his comprehensive wages, according to what was confirmed by union and labor services home in a press release.
