Morocco: Textile and Clothing Factory in Tangier No Longer Operating, Puts 500 Workers at Risk of Homelessness

More than 500 workers at a textile and clothing factory are currently facing the threat of losing their jobs and going homeless.

These workers have been working for the former Tangier mayor's factory for more than 20 years.

On the details of the casse, Moulay Mostafa El Alaoui, the regional secretary of the General Union of Workers in Morocco, said in a statement to the “Febrayer” website that workers have been suffering since 2017 of delayed wages and the absence of social security coverage.

El Alaoui indicated to the same source that the company decided to temporarily halt work for a period of one month in mid-December last year, which came in agreement with the workers.

However, they were surprised late last month, with the company’s closure announcement for an additional 4 months.

This closure will continue until April, a decision made without any prior notice to the workers.

El Alaoui emphasized that this sudden behaviour by the factory prevails as a direct way to lay off workers and make them vulnerable to a potential homelessness situation.

El Alaoui also noted that the ownership of the company belongs to the former mayor of Tangier, Dahman Al Dirham.

El-Alaoui pointed out that workers are protesting on various occasions in front of the Tangiers governorate headquarters, raising angry slogans denouncing the company's management's contempt for their professional fate, disregard of their legal rights and repudiation of the social obligations they have towards them.
