Anger amongst Saudi Unemployed over “Vision 2030” Employment Promises

Since Saudi Arabia's launch of Vision 2030 in 2016, the Kingdom's leaders have promoted it as the solution that will possibly distance their economy from oil, by providing 6 million jobs for graduates and Saudis during the first 15 years. However, in terms of numbers, the results have been different and disappointing.

Al-Khaleej Online pointed out that Saudi graduates voiced out their opinions through social media, calling for job opportunities and demanding the implementation of what they were promised when Vision 2030 was launched.

In the face of the cries of the unemployed, officials in Saudi Arabia did not stop making more promises to provide hundreds of thousands of job opportunities. The most recent one was the speech of the CEO of “NEOM”, Nazmi Al-Nasr, about the launch of the “NEOM” Academy, and providing the unemployed with 6000 jobs.

In the beginning of 2018, the Saudi authorities announced that they trained more than 8,400 male and female graduates in digital skills to qualify them for the labor market, yet those still did not manage to find jobs, according to official statements and tweets of certain graduates.

The vision aims to allocate jobs for Saudis, but according to a report issued by the Saudi Statistics Authority numbers indicate that foreigners’ jobs increased by more than 100,000 jobs during the second quarter of 2019.

According to the report, Saudis also lost more than 20 thousand jobs during the same period, which gives an indication of “a new failure to see 2030”. It was launched by Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman and was aimed at resettling Saudis in many new jobs, especially in the tourism sector.

The same report also stated that the total number of employed Saudis and non-Saudis reached 12 million and 857 thousand, including two million and 300 thousand girls, and the number of Saudis working in a job reached 3 million, including one million girls, during the second quarter of 2019.

Saudi Statistics Authority’s report indicated that the number of non-Saudis working has reached 9 million and 653 thousand, including one million and 195 girls, which is a large number and a new blow to the plans of the authorities in the “Saudization of jobs”.
