Scorching Anger Among Teachers in Mauritania

The Basic Education Sector in Mauritania is currently witnessing a growing congestion due to the poor working conditions experienced by teachers.

The teachers are calling for school security, and for inclusion in the running of the sector, and the reforming of the educational system. They also called for keeping it away from all forms of political tensions.

On February 3, 2020, teachers launched a strike to demand improvement in their working conditions, and they organized a protest in front of the Ministry of Basic Education in Nouakchott.

The strike was to express their rejection of what they called ignoring the authority of their demands.

According to a member of the Executive Coordination Office of Basic Education, Sayed Mohamed Ould Asnib, in a statement to Al-Akhbar, the data they obtained confirms the great response to the strike, indicating that they are proceeding with protest movements, including a two-days teaching strike this month and another three-days strike in March.
