According to “Sky News Arabia”, more than 280.000 foreign workers of African and Asian origins in Lebanon, were affected by the worsening economic crisis in the country.
Such situation led some of them to consider returning to their home countries.
Hundreds of workers gathered in front of the Bangladeshi embassy in Beirut to finish the necessary procedures in preparation for leaving the country, as reported by “Sky News Arabia”.
Foreign workers are being overwhelmed with fear and anxiety, some of them were dismissed from their jobs, and others were unable to obtain their already modest salaries in US dollars.
Lawyer at the Human Trafficking Department of the “Enough” organization, Mohanna Ishaq, stated that the repercussions of this crisis in general on this fragile and legally unprotected labor group “could start with them not receiving their wages in US dollars and could increase, if the crisis gets worse, to cases to abuse at work and contracts’ levels”.
The challenges facing foreign workers persists at a time when experts are predicting that the economic crisis in Lebanon will be worsening in the upcoming months.
