UNRWA: Omission of the Word “Refugees” From School Banners was a “Technical Error”

Media advisor of Gaza’s branch of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, Adnan Abu Hasna, responded to the accusations made towards the agency concerning the omission of the word “refugees” from the banners of some of its schools: “What happened was just a technical mistake by the contractor in charge of this job in schools”.

Abu Hasna added in his press statements: “When the contractor finished working in some schools, he put up signs with the names of the schools and dropped the word “refugees”

“This was not at the request of the UNRWA administration”, stressing that “UNRWA started pulling the banners down to make the necessary changes as quickly as possible by putting back the word “refugees” on these schools.

Abu Hasna also said that “there is no significant change to the agency's policy on this subject”.

It is important to note that Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip had noticed signs of some of the UNRWA schools with the word “refugees” crossed out.
