Protest against their poor living conditions in Lebanon: About 200 Syrian refugees attend a sit-in in Tripoli

About 200 Syrian refugees are carrying out an open sit-in in front of the UNHCR headquarters in city Tripoli (northern Lebanon), to protest their living conditions and condemn the neglect practiced against them by the UNHCR.

The refugees pitched their tents in front of the UNHCR headquarters three days ago, when a group of them announced a hunger strike until their demands were fulfilled.

The "Muhajir News" website, citing testimonies of the protesters, confirmed that the health situation of the hunger strikers deteriorated with the passage of time, amid neglect by UNHCR staff.

"Every day, Lebanese Red Cross teams attend three or four times, from hunger strikers, cases requiring hospital admission immediately, but they refuse to do so because they are unable to secure the costs of treatment."

The protesters raise a slogan of slogans, and "they are the natural rights of any refugee living in the same conditions as the Syrian refugees in Lebanon," one of the protesters asserts to his site, "Muhajir News", who also said "We want to enhance medical aid for Syrians in Lebanon, especially cancer cases," It is unreasonable for children with this malignant disease to die before the eyes of their parents without being able to provide them with appropriate treatment, and we call on the commission to find a solution to the difficult medical conditions.

The site reported that there are many Syrian families who are threatened with eviction from their homes now due to their inability to pay the rents, "With the deteriorating economic situation, house rents have become a burden on the Syrians here, most of the families have become dependent on UNHCR financial assistance that is not sufficient mainly to secure food, and therefore they cannot "Provide rents for their homes, so we ask the UNHCR to provide shelters for these families, otherwise we will be facing a major displacement problem."

Refugees also demand the right to humane treatment, "We are being mistreated here, we do not want to be expelled by the UNHCR security every time we come to ask about something related to our life conditions," according to one of the hunger strikers confirmed to "Muhajir News".
