Retirement Crisis Reaches Moroccan Parliament

On Monday, February 3, a group of Moroccan MPs discussed the problems and the living situation of retirees in Morocco.

In their speeches, the deputies highlighted the alarming and dire situation facing a large segment of retirees due to the low pensions they receive, which causes them constant distress.

MPs held Othmani’s government responsible for the pension’s fund crisis and its failure to manage and solve its imbalances.

They also highlighted the need to gather support for both military and civilian retirees, through reviewing their pensions, exempting them from the income tax they need to bear, granting them an increase similar to the one applied to wages as well as reviewing the retirements of parliamentarians and ministers.

In their addresses to the parliament, the MPs made it clear that Moroccans’ retirement plans are currently at risk because pension systems are threatened by bankruptcy and thus an unknown fate awaits retirees.
