Morocco: Arbitrary Expulsion of the Sultana Hotel General Secretary in El Oualidia City and the Labour Directorate is a Complicit

Despite all dialogue attempts, the administration of the Sultana hotel in El Oualidia city decided to dismiss the general secretary of the syndicate bureau that is affiliated with the Moroccan Labour Union.

Sidi Bennour’s local trade unions condemned the behaviour of the hotel’s previous owner, which described her as “colonial, exploitative and diminishing to the dignity of her employees”. Further adding that she called out workers as thieves.

The hotel workers also denounced the expulsion of Mr. Tariq Qawas, the general secretary of the syndicate bureau in Sultana El Oualidia company Marrakech, and the hotel’s owner persistence to abuse the workers through unreasonably changing their working hours and forcing them to work for an unlimited, unpaid, compulsory number of extra hours.

Workers also condemned the continuous abuse of power, intimidation and threat to expulsion used towards members of the syndicate bureau. The hotel’s owner also rejected to have an increase in the wages as required by the law and forced workers hard labour work through pushing them to carry heavy weights and demanding them to operate outside of the hotel. The context of this last activity is referred to as “picnic work”, which is a law-violating context.

The hotel’s syndicate bureau denounced in turn the owner’s persistence to use judicial commissioners to deliver default at work malicious notices to members of the syndicate bureau. The most recent of these notices being the expulsion notice to the UMT general secretary and an abuse of an employee through changing her duties in contradiction to the terms already agreed upon by the two parties in the previously signed employment contract.

The local union also denounced the Sultan hotel’s owner insulting the employees by calling them “les marocains les voleurs” (French for “Moroccans thieves”), being forgetful about the fact that she is living thanks to Moroccan goods and is getting rich from the effort put by honourable Moroccans.

It also denounced the complicity of the labour directorate in Al Jadida with the hotel’s owner, whilst neglecting the employees’ rights, expelling them and justifying the arbitrariness of the hotel’s owner behaviours under false pretexts. Also, their failure to observe the law in dealing with the expulsion procedure against the general secretary at the Sultana hotel as well as the lack of responses to correspondences by the regional director.
