Iraq: Armed individuals target peaceful protesters

Activists said that masked and armed individuals opened fire on demonstrators yesterday in the city of Nassiriya which led to the injury of some demonstrators. Activists on Twitter said the individuals were in three cars, without registrations, which were headed for the large bridge. The injured protesters have been transferred to the local hospital, although details of the individuals have yet to be released.

A surfer said three pickups, which were heading towards the large bridge, opened fire on the demonstrators without the Iraqi security forces reacting.

This kind of incident is not the first since the protests that erupted last October to demand the departure of the political class. Unidentified people opened fire on protesters gathered at the Education Square in Kerbala last week, which resulted in the injury of three people, including one said to be in critical condition by Iraqi police.

On January 10, unidentified people opened fire on a car transporting two journalists to an area around the police headquarters in Basra city. The two journalists were murdered.

Iraqi protesters, on the other hand, escalated their movements in different parts of the country after the end of the deadline given to politicians to appoint a new prime minister and to investigate those responsible for the assassination of the protesters.

The protests are part of the second wave of protests against corruption and the economic crisis in Iraq. Faced with these peaceful demonstrations, the authorities responded with a wave of repression which tyrannized the Iraqis. Violence committed by masked and armed individuals and snipers.

In this context, an Iraqi security source revealed that two people died while 67 others were injured during the incidents in the center of Baghdad. Law enforcement officials for their part attacked the main headquarters of the Baghdad protesters in an attempt to forcibly dismantle the sit-in in Ettahrir Square.
