Tunisia: 900 victims of trafficking in human beings

The president of the National Authority against Trafficking in Human Beings, Raouda Laâbidi, estimated that the number of victims of trafficking in human beings reaches 900, of which more than 60% are victims of forced labor, Tunisians and foreigners in particular from Ivory Coast.

In media statements, Raouda Laâbidi explained that the National Authority to Combat Trafficking in Human Beings will focus in 2020 on the fight against forced labor, which represents the most dangerous economic exploitation since it is carried out by violence and threat. The Chair added that the Mechanism will present its 2019 annual report on January 23 to the head of government and recalled that in 2018, the Mechanism had focused on combating the exploitation of minors following statistics, published in 2017, which revealed that of 742 victims of human trafficking, 75% were children. Raouda Laâbidi explained that this rate dropped to 42% in 2018.

The Chairperson of the Mechanism added that the marked development in 2018 does not mean that the number of victims has increased but that the victims of human trafficking have started to contact the Mechanism to alert it. He added that the number of cases that were transferred to the justice system increased in 2019, as did the number of women involved in trafficking in human beings.
