In a letter to Public Security, embassies, consulates and international organizations, hundreds of activists called for easing the procedures for returning migrant workers who no longer wish to work in Lebanon. Activists have called for urgent policies to tackle abuse and the wage crisis, which continues to escalate with the dollar crisis.
In their letter, the activists explained that foreign workers lose around 40% of their wages due to the devaluation of the Lebanese national currency, which prevents them from returning home. The applicants called on the Lebanese Public Security to issue a decision to facilitate the departure of the foreign workers without imposing any complications or kidnapping on them.
The signatories to the letter called for workers to be exempt from the annual penalty fee and to help those who wish to leave find compromises with their employers. Interested parties have called for a task force to work with embassies to reduce administrative procedures for investigations of abuse and the issuance of new passports.
The activists also called on the embassies of migrant workers to put in place an emergency plan to help those concerned to leave Lebanon by collaborating with Lebanese security.
