Iraqi activists have been subject to a massive campaign of intimidation and kidnapping since the outbreak of the protests. Since the start of the events, 26 activists, men and women, have been kidnapped and their whereabouts remain unknown.
The day before yesterday, activist Janet Madhi was assassinated in an armed attack in the city of Basra, southern Iraq, where a group of activists provided first aid to protesters. The late Janet Madhi had worked in the field since the protests began and was known for her help with orphanages and single mothers.
The incidents of violence resulted in the deaths of approximately 500 protesters while another 25,000 were injured. On December 2, the late Zahra Ali Salman, 19, was kidnapped by unknown persons so that her body was found outside the door of her home 10 hours after her abduction.
According to the medical examiner's report, published by the family of the victim, Zahra Ali Salman was beaten and electrocuted before her assassination. The girl was a student and field activist with her parents.
On November 2, 2019, rescuer and activist Saba Mahdaoui was kidnapped by an armed group on her way home after participating in a sit-in in central Baghdad. Saba Mahdaoui was released two weeks after her abduction.
On October 8, activist Mary Mohamed was kidnapped for five days in an individual cell where she was questioned by law enforcement officers on charges relating to "support from foreign parties".
