In the industrial cities of Jordan: a violation of workers' rights in adequate and healthy food

An investigation published by the Jordanian "Al-Ghad" website revealed the humiliating conditions of workers in the industrial cities, and the report emphasized that these cities are beset with decent work agreements and deprive their workers of adequate and healthy food.

The site highlighted in its investigation that the majority of the workers of these factories reside in gatherings designated for them by these cities, but part of these factories did not pay any attention to the feeding of their workers, and violated one of their most basic rights, by not providing adequate, healthy and decent food for them, to add this Assaulting their rights, in light of the violations they are also experiencing.

The site affirmed that despite the importance of the file of the right to food for the workers of spinning and weaving factories, which constitute more than 98% of the factories of the qualified industrial zones, and females working in them constitute 85%, the migrant workforce is 84%, but this file was absent from the agendas of government and unions Workers and civil society organizations.

Besides, the workers suffer from physical, verbal or sexual violence, which makes their claim, or the demand of any trade union, human rights or government, for their right to good, adequate and sustainable food, something like a kind of luxury or additional privilege.

The investigation confirmed that 3 meals are served daily to workers, the components of which do not meet the nutritional needs of workers due to their weakness and lack of diversity, as well as the lack of hygiene standards in kitchens, as cooking takes place in old times, and cooking is repeated daily without cleaning them, as most kitchens are missing Factories for cleaning tools and materials, as well as the lack of storage places for food.

These accounts, which were monitored by the investigation, were also confirmed by the latest report of the "Better Work" program of the International Labor Organization, a program that tries to promote and establish decent work conditions in the factories of the qualified industrial cities.

In the same context, it appears that the supervision of the rest of the factories is almost reaching its lowest levels, due to the weakness of the inspection personnel in the Ministry of Labor.
