The secretary-general of the General Federation of Palestinian Trade Unions, Chahar Saad, has considered 2019 as the year of the massacre of Palestinian workers following the increase in the number of workers killed on the job, whether in the labor market in the occupied land or the Palestinian labor market. By the end of 2019, the number of workers killed had reached 72.
32 workers died in Hebron district, 12 inside occupied, 9 in Jenin district, 5 in Tulkarm, 6 in Nablus, 4 in Bethlehem, 4 in Jerusalem, 3 in Qalqilya, 2 in Ramallah, one worker unidentified and 4 on the occupation labor market. 90% of the victims worked in the construction sector.
Compared to other years, 2019 represents a real carnage for Palestinian workers with a number of deaths never known in more than fifty years. In the absence of any oversight from the Occupation’s Ministry of Labor and the Palestinian Labor Ministry, employers fail to provide the necessary protection tools which violate international labor standards.
In addition, a large part of the Palestinians work in the occupation market without a work permit, making them victims of the black market in the ‘Israeli’ economy where they exploited.
