Qatar: British newspaper reports on living conditions at ‘Al-Shahania’ camp

The British newspaper ‘Daily Mail’ reported that the living conditions of 2022 World Cup construction workers living in ‘Al-Shahania’ camp were dire. Quoting Amnesty International, the newspaper said that ‘Al-Shahania’ camp, located 25 km from Doha, is a collection of buildings scattered across the road and hosting large numbers of Indians and Pakistanis.

In this context, the 'Daily Mail' indicated that workers are required, in order to be able to work on World Cup construction sites, to pay large sums of money to their kefil when the practice (the kefala) would have must have been prohibited since the start of construction. Meanwhile, researcher Nicholas McGeehan said Qatari authorities continue to conceal the death conditions of 385 Indian, Bangladeshi and Nepalese workers who died in 2012.

The Qatari authorities ignore international laws concerning the treatment of foreign workers in Qatar; workers who are victims of difficult living and working conditions, especially for those who work on World Cup sites. The workers have complained about several occasions about wages, food and the confiscation of their passports.
