Tunisia: FTDES reveals serious violations against refugees and asylum seekers

The Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) exposed serious violations against refugees and asylum seekers in Tunisia. The FTDES has noted, through testimonies collected in recent months, significant gaps in the level of services presented to refugees and asylum seekers, especially with regard to respecting the rights of individuals in need of international protection.

In a press release published the day before yesterday, the FTDES indicated that there is no reception center for refugees in Tunis, which has led the authorities to book hotels for the most vulnerable refugees provided that the stay of those concerned does not exceed 14 days. This situation has caused several minors and families with children to sleep on the streets. According to the statement, more than 130 people were forced to sleep on the street in December this year.

On the Tunisian south side, the FTDES stressed that the reception centers are overcrowded and that the governorates of Tunis and Sfax do not offer the necessary services to refugees who only have access to medical care in urgent cases where there is no psychological follow-up or legal support for asylum seekers.

The Forum also indicated that the majority of unaccompanied minors live on the streets without any support or access to medical care or education. Several of these minors are victims of violence and harassment because of this situation.

The FTDES has assured people who have crossed Libya and who have been victims of torture have no psychological treatment so despite their fragile condition. He added that since the beginning of the current year, several suicide attempts have been reported, including the case of a minor who tried to kill himself in a reception center under the authority of the United Nations Agency. The press release also returned to the difficulty that certain nationalities have to file a request for refuge which obliges them to wait for long months before being able to make a request for protection to remain nine months to wait to obtain the statute of a refugee . According to the FTDES, asylum seekers face several shortcomings and shortcomings in the procedures for obtaining the title in question.
