The General Union of Electricity Workers of Jordan called on the Ministry of Labor to intervene in order to uphold a verdict pronounced by the Court of Amman, concerning the payment of overtime, by the administration of the Electricity Company. In this context, the Jordanian Labor Observatory indicated, in a publication posted on its official Facebook page, that the company did not respect this verdict pronounced a year ago.
The article 59 of the Labor Code provides that "the worker may work overtime daily or weekly provided that he receives, for these hours, 125% of his salary". The same article stipulates that "if the employee works during his weekly leave or during official holidays, he receives an additional salary of at least 150% of his usual salary".
In correspondence with the Minister of Labor, the Union explained that the complaint, filed against the Company in 2016, states that the said company does not comply with the accounting for overtime, which violates section 59 of the Labor Code. Following this, the ministry, in turn, sent inspectors to verify the facts before issuing a warning to the Electricity Company.
Despite the procedure initiated by the ministry, the company continued to refuse to pay overtime for its workers, which led the minister to transfer the complaint to the Amman Court.
In its correspondence, the union explained that if the company continues to refuse to apply the verdict, it will be forced to use its rights to protect workers and their interests.
