Jordan: Tamkeen Center reviews working conditions of agricultural workers

The Tamkeen Center has begun further discussions with civil society and trade unions to create a National Alliance to demand the publication of a scheme for agricultural workers.

In this context, the newspaper 'Al Ghad' reported, quoting the director of the center, that the initiative comes after eleven years of the amendment of the Labor Code (an amendment that allowed agricultural workers to be understood by law), which has created new challenges and overruns against those concerned, especially with regard to their rights and working conditions.

In a statement to the newspaper, Linda Klash, director of the center, said that agricultural workers work long hours for very low wages while they are deprived of social security and annual leave and sickness. Linda Klash added that the National Alliance will work on legislative and union levels to lobby for the issuance of the plan. According to her, this Alliance will be open to everyone and training will be organized by civil society and trade unions to set the objectives and working mechanisms of the new coalition.

It should be noted that the Tamkeen Center published a study entitled 'Forgotten Rights and Difficult Working Conditions for Foreign Agricultural Workers in Jordan' where it was revealed that agricultural workers work 10 to 12 hours a day for a lower wage twice to that perceived by Jordanians.

The study also revealed that the housing conditions of workers are inhuman without any respect for the standards in force.
