The Phoenix Center for Economic Studies and Information has published a press release on working conditions in cleaning companies and especially those working with public and private hospitals. The report estimated the number of workers in the sector at around 10,000 workers, one-third of men, and explained the majority of these workers are Jordanians. In 2019, the number of these workers has increased significantly compared to 2012 marking an increase of 80% for foreign workers.
The Phoenix Center report indicated that workers in this sector often suffer major wage violations that do not exceed 220 dinars per month. And to add that several workers are forced to work for long hours (more than 8 hours per day) and are made to work overtime, unpaid, more than 16 hours.
The report explained that these practices represent a serious violation of section 57 of the Labor Code, which sets hours of work at 8 hours a day, except in special periods (not to exceed 30 days a year) and two maximum overtime per day.
The Phoenix Center report has ensured that workers in the sector are deprived of their right to annual leave, public holidays and social security. And to add that the professional stability in this sector is almost non-existent since the workers do not benefit from an employment contract.
