Mauritania: SNIM workers refuse payroll deduction for CNAM

The workers of the National Industrial and Mining Company (SNIM) organized last Wednesday, a protest rally in front of the residence of the director general of the company in the city of Zouerate to protest against the agreement signed between SNIM with the National Fund health insurance (CNAM).

The agreement in question, signed without any official announcement, provides a levy dedicated to the CNAM which was largely rejected by the workers. In this context, the online newspaper 'Sahara Media' reported, citing trade union sources, that according to this agreement, the CNAM covers the cost of caring for workers and their families abroad while SNIM the cost of mission compensation and care costs at the workplace and in Mauritanian hospitals.

The agreement also stipulates that the CNAM will, at the end of each year, reimburse a portion of the contributions paid by SNIM to cover the cost of caring for workers at workplaces and at local hospitals. 'Sahara Media' added that the agreement was made in complete opacity to avoid any reaction from the workers. This led workers' representatives in the town of Zouerate to call the head of the human resources department to inform the company administration of their refusal of the agreement in question. Workers have threatened to step up if the agreement is not canceled.
