Kuwait: Allegations by Indian newspaper tied to ‘suicides’

The English-language newspaper The Times of India claimed in a report that “121 bodies of Indians working in Kuwait returned to India in coffins during the period in question.”

The newspaper quoted the Andhra Pradesh Non-Resident Telugu (APNRT) Society as its source which said many of these Indians have died of suicides caused by hunger and extreme weather conditions and in some cases ill-treatment and torture by their employers.

APNRT, a government association for Telugu-speaking Indians said “174 Indians from the Gulf countries died between Jan 16, 2018 and Aug 22, and that 70% or 121 of these Indian workers were from Kuwait.”

The Times of India claimed on its website one migrant worker from Andhra Pradesh died almost every three days in the Middle East between Jan 16, 2018, and Aug 22, 2019
