Egypt: Workers at 'Universal' factory continue their strike

Workers at the 'Universal' mechanical engineering plant begin their 10th day of strike demanding, as they have since 2012, that the administration pay salaries and bonuses without delay.

In this context, the Office of Trade Union and Professional Services in Egypt issued a statement in which it assured that the factory administration delays wages and deprives employees of their bonuses and other benefits before the workers file a complaint with the Ministry of Labor on March 11, 2012.

In the same communiqué, the Office explained that the administration has continued to delay wages despite all its commitments and has paid only half of a salary to the dismissed employees by precisely firing unfair dismissals on the pretext of financial difficulties. For about a year and a half, the situation became even more complicated, especially after it turned out that the owner of the plant was trying to liquidate his business, which led workers to file another complaint with the labor office in the City from October 6th to May 5th, 2019.

Following this, the factory accepted the workers' requests without applying them, which led the protesters to file another complaint with the Ministry of Labor on October 8, 2019. The workers called on the Ministry to intervene to to save the professional fate of 2100 employees and help them get a copy of their contract. The protesters called on the authorities to pressure the owner to agree to form an employee-elected union committee to protect and defend workers' rights.

The Office of Trade Union and Professional Services in Egypt expressed its unconditional support for the workers at the factory and called on all democratic forces to join with them to help them obtain their legitimate and legal rights. The Office recalled at the end of its communiqué that the formation of unions is a constitutional right guaranteed to all workers.
