The National Union of Paramedics has called for a general strike in the health facilities of the governorate of El Oued to put pressure for the release of agents arrested in the case of the death of a newborn following a fire that broke out in the maternity of the city.
The union rejected the idea that the nurses would be sacrificed to absorb the general anger and recalled that the attendants were not even on duty the night of the fire and that, even if they were present, they were not responsible this type of accident caused by equipment failure.
The union accused the ministry of being responsible for the fire as the latter allowed the maternity ward to be managed by a Cuban team following an agreement signed in 2016; according to the union, the ministry would have used everything so that the Cuban team was not questioned about the incident. In this context, the Union stated that the maternity service does not comply with safety and prevention standards, that aeration is very limited and that fire alarms are non-existent.
For their part, doctors and paramedics have launched a large campaign on social networks entitled 'I am a doctor and not a firefighter'; a campaign denouncing the attack on them and criticizing the authorities for failing to provide health facilities that meet safety standards and the needs of citizens.
