Egypt: Activists announce the arrest and disappearance of more than 500 people

Egyptian activists and human rights defenders have claimed to have received alerts from families, on the disappearance and arrest of more than 500 people during the movements organized last Friday and Saturday in Cairo and in several other cities of the country. For their part, media sources reported that the public prosecutor ordered the imprisonment of about 200 protesters for 15 days.

The lawyer at the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights, Ala Abdel Taweb, said that 370 people have been summoned by the State Security Prosecutor while the fate of some others is still unknown. He added that the arrested persons were allowed, some have not yet reached the age of 18 and that the authorities have charged them with membership in terrorist groups, the propagation of intox and the organization of an unauthorized protest. The lawyer stated that the Centre continues to receive alerts which suggests that the number of orders may increase in the coming days.

For its part, Human Rights Watch called on the Egyptian authorities last Saturday to protect the right to peaceful protest in accordance with international human rights law. The organization called on the Egyptian President, Abdelfattah Sissi, to order compliance with international standards regarding the management of protests and the release of all protesters.

The Egyptian police agents used tear gas to disperse a demonstration against President Sissi last Friday. A demonstration that took place around Tahrir Square where police arrested several protesters.
