Morocco: UMT condemns violent attack on Moroccan trade union movement

The Moroccan Workers' Union (UMT) has denounced the violent attack that targets the Moroccan trade union movement where trade union rights are repressed, trade unionists dismissed, labor laws violated and the achievements of workers in the public and private sectors flouted. The UMT warned the government about the deterioration of social conditions.

In a statement, the central union protested against the government, which delays the implementation of the material part of the agreement of April 25th 2019 and explained that this affects the credibility of the Social Dialogue and business confidence. The UMT called on the government to extend the wage increase to public enterprises by executing the item on initiation of sectoral negotiations in public enterprises of an industrial, commercial and service nature.

The UMT also denounced the regression noted in the field of social legislation, fruit of the tripartite social dialogues, and especially with regard to the Labor Code around which the Moroccan trade union movement, the bosses and the government agreed. The union has also rejected the draft law on the strike in its current form and the draft law on professional organizations explaining that it is imperative for the government to involve the labor movement in the formulation of legislation and laws of interest to them and that tripartite social dialogue must be consulted with the aim of reaching consensus on the question of strike action and the independence of the trade union movement.
