The Oman Human Rights Committee has revisited the case of a female African worker allegedly tortured by the family that employs her. The Committee followed up on the case, which began with a letter from the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) concerning the worker who is trying to return to her native country.
After this letter, the committee contacted the worker and her employer. The employer denied all the accusations and said that the worker had simply been trying to change employers, which led to conflict.
The Oman Human Rights Committee contacted the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, overseen by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which in turn sent a work team to the home where an investigation was initiated. According to that official investigation, the worker's accusations were unfounded and the complainant was merely seeking to terminate her contract with the family concerned.
The worker was led by the members of the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings to a registered medical center where spokespeople stated that she had not been the victim of any form of violence. The African worker was later transferred to a safe place where all her needs and rights were provided before leaving for her home country.
