Garbage collectors in Khartoum (Gabra North, Al Shijra and Burri Allamab regions) have decided to go on strike to protest a 500-pound ($ 11) wage deduction on the pretext of unjustified absence during the Eid holiday.
Local media reported, quoting union president Mohamed Ali Khlouji, that the deduction in question is illegal since it was agreed that the garbage workers who will work on Eid day will be paid twice. The complainant also recalled that some garbage collectors have been working for companies since 1996 without a contract.
In 2013, garbage collectors were fired before being recruited again but without a contract, without annual leave and without health insurance. These garbage collectors are often victims of work accidents due to the absence of professional prevention equipment.
