Jordan: This is what is committed against the workers by the construction companies in Jordan

The Observatory of Business and Human Rights recently published a report on the situation of construction workers in Jordan.

Quoting this report, 'Al Ghad' newspaper draw the attention on four main problems facing workers in the construction sector in Jordan. First of which is discrimination against migrants workers since it showed that the minimum wage for the migrant workers is far below the average applied for Jordanian workers in the construction sector. Jobs were divided in the construction sector according to nationality, giving Jordanian workers full time jobs at the supervisory, operational and administrative level, while Egyptian and Syrian workers are given short term jobs that require physical effort.

Workers also suffer from wage payment delay and the violation of safety and security standards (the sector has the highest accident rate in Jordan representing 30% of total deaths, 44 deaths for every 100,000 workers).

The report also showed the impact of the refugee crisis non migrant workers saying that the government has tried to give an official character to the Syrian work force and provide better circumstances by alleviating the procedures for Syrian migrants to obtain work permits. Although these steps were clearly welcomed, these were coupled with an intensive campaigns against illegal migrants construction workers from other nationalities ( most of them Egyptians) according to what was said : to open job opportunities for Syrians. This led to a significant increase in arrests, fines and deportations. In 2017, 9448 migrant workers were deported.
