Tunisia: Municipal council members accused of overstepping authority

The 'Achaab' newspaper reported that the General Federation of Municipalities, under the umbrella of Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT), issued a statement in which it presented what it said was evidence some members of municipal councils overstepping their authority and abusing their power. This includes council members who civil servants accuse of having intervened in the internal management of municipalities by giving instructions that do not respect the administrative hierarchy.

In its communiqué, the General Federation called on authorities to assume their responsibilities and to intervene quickly by publishing organizational charts to clarify the relations between the elected municipal councils and the municipalities' administrations as soon as possible. The General Federation of Municipalities recalled having already submitted a note on this subject, accompanied by the text of the basic statute for municipalities.

In addition, the municipality federation called on the Ministry of Local Affairs and the Environment to organize a meeting with representatives of the municipal councils to discuss the texts and to validate them while announcing that it is ready to begin all the necessary steps to defend the rights of appointed municipal officials.
