Kuwait: Official report of Egypt’s Statistical Authority provokes outcry in Parliament

The Kuwaiti newspaper 'Al Rai' revealed that the official report of Egypt’s Statistical Authority concerning 8000 Egyptians who arrived in Kuwait caused a widespread outcry in Parliament. The paper said the report in question turned into a controversy between Parliament and the government where trust has completely broken down between the parliamentary committee on human resource development and human employment and employee mechanisms.

In this context, MP Safa Hachem said the report – which highlights the granting of approximately 98,000 new work permits for Egyptians, most of whom do not hold diplomas, in Kuwait in 2018 – represents a crime against Kuwait's interests. Hachem added that Egyptian statistics are totally contradictory with government data that asserts the reduction of non-productive foreign labor.

The Kuwaiti MP said the report proves that the government is not serious in its policy of nationalization of jobs and called on the same government to respond quickly to the Egyptian statistics.

For his part, MP Mohamed Dalal called for the data provided by said report to be checked to determine whether the new permits in question concern government posts or not. He explained that should the permits relate to the private sector, the government should give an opinion on this figure which opposes its policy of demographic regulation, a policy that aims to provide an effective and demanded labor force in the labor market.
