Algeria: Employees of 'Al Wakat Al Jadid' press group without salaries for three months

The news website 'Annahar Online' reported that employees of the 'Al Wakat Al Jadid' press group are seeking special permission from the Justice Ministry to disburse their suspended salaries for three months. Previously the administration had stopped the salaries of employees following the closure of the channel 'Zaïr News' on 25 June.

The administration had put in place a preliminary list of 88 employees to be dismissed before adding 180 others to reach a total of 250 dismissed employees in less than two months. Following this, the employees held a series of consultative meetings in the middle of the month of Ramadan that resulted in the election of a seven-employee rescue body. This body began marathon negotiations with the representatives of the administration and the manager of the company without giving real results.

In addition, the employees presented to the former Director-General, who did not complete any of the seven months at the head of the group, a series of unanswered requests; the Director-General finally resigned on July 16, 2019.

Following this resignation, it was agreed to appoint Miloud Louil Group Director-General after the latter agreed to relinquish its administrative and technical prerogatives to the benefit of the proceeding. For the past two weeks, the new Director General has been working with the employees to establish the administrative and legal procedures to transfer the management of the group to his employees.

The news site 'Annahar Online' added that the employees have appointed one of their colleagues for the position of Director-General, seeking to restructure the group with its two television channels and two newspapers, in Arabic and French, and to find a way out of the crisis.
