The Palestinian press agency reported that Labor Minister Nasri Abu Jaish pledged to abide by all international standards in the amendments to the Palestinian Labor Code to avoid further controversy.
This announcement was made during the intervention of the Minister, during a workshop on the revision of the 2000 Palestinian Labor Code number 7 at a workshop organized the day before yesterday – Wednesday – in Ramallah. The workshop is part of a series of workshops and meetings held with employers and employees under the theme of 'prioritizing good market governance and activating social dialogue'. Meetings under the Decent Work Program 2018-2022 were organized with the collaboration of the International Labor Organization (ILO).
For his part, the ILO's advisor on the Palestinian Labor Code and its legislation, Hamada Abou Najma, explained that the Code needs to be revised since it was issued 19 years ago and that the economic challenges and market conditions have evolved since. He emphasized the importance of striking a balance between the protection of basic rights and the strengthening of the working environment of enterprises, all with the participation of Palestinian national authorities in order to develop social and economic policies for the country.
Hamada Abu Najma said that the revision of the law is one of the main objectives of the 2018-22 decent work program.
Added to that, the scope of the process of revision of the law will take into account the shortcomings of the application, the interests of the concerned parties, the form and the formulation, the international standards, the national specificity, the equality, the fight against discrimination and forced labor, the fight against child labor, health and safety at work, the mechanisms of the individual contract and its termination, equality between the sexes, the disabled and young people, the protection of childhood and the guarantee of negotiations with the institutions concerned.
