Following the death of the former Tunisian president, Beji Caid Essebsi, the National Executive Office of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) expressed its satisfaction over the announcement of Mohamed Ennaceur as the new interim president, until the elections, and in accordance with the constitution.
The executive office stressed in a statement that the presidential and legislative elections should take place within the constitutional deadlines, and that that the presidential election has to precede the legislative one. Moreover, it rejects the electoral law’s amendments, as they are incompatible with the constitution and violate the voters’ will. Besides, it asked for the postponement of these amendments, until the next elections, with the consultation of all the parties. The current president and the Independent Electoral Commission called on the implementation of the current electoral law.
The executive office affirmed that Tunisia, which has been through the revolution of freedom and dignity, won the Nobel Peace Prize, respected its constitution and laws, including the peaceful transfer of power, and depended on its people awareness, is not at risk, despite the threats of terrorism.
It also announced the suspension of all the programmed trade union movements and their postponement to later dates, calling on the trade unions for further unity and solidarity for the benefit of Tunisia.
