Sudan: The Sudanese Professionals' Association calls for protests

Sudanese authorities have ordered schools closed indefinitely after crowds of students took to the streets on Tuesday to protest against the death of five students, in a town in central Sudan.

Thousands of Sudanese students joined protests across the country to condemn the violent dispersal of Monday's demonstration in al-Obeid, North Kordofan, against fuel and bread shortages.

Demonstrators accused paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of killing the teenagers.

For its part, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) called on the authorities to open an investigation into the case claiming that the victims were between 15 and 17 years old.

It is worth noting that the Sudanese authorities imposed a night curfew in four cities in North Kordofan governorate while the Sudanese trade association called for protests across the country against what it called carnage.

The association, which initiated the protests on Facebook, assured that more than sixty citizens were injured in the town of El Obeid last Monday. Witnesses reported that the student rally was organized due to a shortage of bread and gas in the city.
