The workers of the Socialist Company of Ports belonging to the Ports and Seafarers Syndicate held a protest, with the presence of the President of the General Federation of Libyan Trade Unions, Nermin Cherif, on Wednesday July 10, 2019 in front of the headquarters of the Libyan Ports Company in protest against the contract signed with the Military Investment Agency of Benghazi’s port.
Following this protest, the president of the union and members of the main union of the Libyan Ports Company in Benghazi met with the chairman of the company’s board of directors, who in turn called for an emergency meeting with the committee at the port, last Thursday.
During the meeting, the contract for utilization of berth No. 2 at the main port and the adjacent yard, which was signed by the Director General of Benghazi Maritime Port with the National Maritime Investment and Services Authority, was studied. In fact, it gave people outside the company the right to handle the work, which is prohibited by law; whereas, the workers have not got their salaries, for years; despite their tremendous efforts to revive the port’s activities.
The trade union party asked for either the cancellation of the contract or its amendment, by adding new provisions that would ensure that the work of the company is not affected and that all the work is done through the company, which was positively approved by the administrative party, pledging to settle the situation, in the coming period.
The Frogmen’s representative of the National Agency for Marine Investments stressed that if this contract causes problems for the workers or their rights, he fully committed to either cancel or approve it, in order to guarantee the workers’ rights.
