The French Press Agency (AFP) confirmed from a UN source that about 900 migrants from Niger who had been held in shelters in Libya since last January have been deported to their homeland under a voluntary deportation program.
The agency added that the final plane arrived last Friday in Niamey carrying 147 Nigerians, including nine "unaccompanied” minors. The voluntary repatriation program is receiving the support of the European Union.
Most of the migrants come from the districts of Tahoua, west Zinder, who have been living in shelters in Libya.
The latest migrant groups include citizens from West African countries, particularly Guinea-Conakry, Mali and Ivory Coast.
